Is this NPR article connecting the etymology of the word "Vanilla" with historical racism inaccurate or disingenuous at all?

Maybe I'm being stupid, but the only etymology the article gives for the word vanilla is that it comes from vaina, which was apparently Latin for pod, and also the root of the word vagina.

I think OP is referring to vanilla = generic = caucasian. Not etymology so much as cultural association.
