Could William the Conqueror read, for instance? How did literacy compare in the previous Anglo-Saxon state (given its complex bureaucracy) to literacy among German counts or Spanish kings?
William the Conqueror was illiterate and actually never learned to speak English. Many nobles were illiterate, however there did remain some institution of Charlemagne's Court Schools system.
