I'm curious as to how lower class passengers on ships like the Titanic and Lusitania were kept from accessing the amenities of higher classes? Were the areas physically inaccessible, were there passes that were checked at the doors, what were the logistics?

There were few accesses between areas. The ones there were would be locked, or attended by crewmen. Yes, Cameron's Titanic story is implausible, if not impossible. It would have been a major scandal for someone from steerage to get into First Class. It would have been a major blot on several officers' careers. There was also the simple social controls of classism: why go where you're not wanted and you wouldn't be comfortable? Some might want a look around at the splendors, but they wouldn't want to hang out with those toffs.
