What were relationships like between Li Zicheng's rebels and the wealthy merchants in the cities?

On vacay w my phone, can't write a real response atm but you should look into Late Ming Peasant Rebellions By Dardess.

The gist of it is that the core of Li Zichengs army were professional bandits interested in looting more than state building. Any sufficiently large rebel group like li's has internal tension between state building literati and the rank and file soldiers. In li's case he never achieved sufficient control over his own forces, which plundered the wealthy in occupied cities even if Li and his literati advisors wished otherwise.
