So there are a lot of clashes between Rome and barbarians, and Atilla comes in and things go bad from what I understand. So during this period what happens to all the corpses after a big battle? Do they all get looted by the winning side/locals? Do they try to bury their own, are they all thrown into mass graves? Who cleans up all the bodies or are they left to rot? Are there special divisions for body clean up knowing the efficiency of the Roman empire?
The only specific contemporary remark that I know of regarding the treatment of the deceased during this period is found in Augustine (De Civitate Dei I.12), who said, of the sacking of Rome by Alaric and the Goths in 410, that "in such a carnage as then occurred, the bodies could not even be buried."
Salvian, speaking of the barbarian invasions of Spain and Gaul, says that fires "consumed" the cities and "the bodies" of the victims (De Gubernatione Dei VII.12).
