When one thinks of the American Revolution, certain names come to mind, such as Jefferson, Washington, Madison, etc. What would be the Confederate equivalents? What were their inspirations, their thinkers, their philosophies? who or what did they draw their country's ideals on? The only non-military name I can think of is Jefferson Davis. All of the other "big names" in the confederacy are military leaders like Lee and Jackson....
Alexander Stephens (VP) William Yancey from Alabama robert barnwell rhett Judah P. Benjamin There were others who were also important but these guys should serve as a good idea of what they were like. The people really driving secession were called the fire-eaters. Rhett and yancey fit into that category. Stephens was against it at first, but got on board when he realized tha it was going to happen. All of these people believed that the South should be able to expand slavery. Stephens actually made a famous speech about this called the cornerstone speech. They all believed, in a stares right to secede, and a weaker federal gov (but one that would still protect their slaves, lol)
