In your mind it may have a connection to cameras, but it comes from the Latin for "painting." That's why the woad-painted barbarians were Picts. So it was absolutely correlated with paintings for two thousand years. If it is no longer associated with painting is probably due to the rise of non-objective art, which is never a picture of anything, and the producers get all huffy if you call a canvas a picture.
