Working on a family album project, scanning photos from my family's collection. I came across this picture (https://www.flickr.com/photos/woodysworldtv/3083245745/in/set-72157610636479149) taken at Johnson Photographers on 31 3rd St. in San Francisco. The caption on the back says June 13 1898 J.L. Harris. Harris is not a family name. And, nobody is familiar. So, here's my question:
*What military activity, if any, was going on in Cali around 1898? *What bases or installments were there at that time? *(long shot) Who is J.L. Harris? *Is there anything about his uniform that indicates rank or duty?
If there's a better subredit, my apologies. I'm still cutting my redditor teeth. Any basic information on the military activity will give me something to research as I go.
There were some the most notable being the Presidio and Fort Point that overlooked the entrance to the Golden Gate in San Francisco. You might try contacting the National Park Service that runs Fort Point and see if they can help you. Also in the area was the Mare Island shipyard. No idea on the uniform.
It is entirely possible that he was just passing through.
