What are some quality primary and secondary sources regarding the quality of life in Western Europe in Late Antiquity.

by Someone_Care

I am looking for sources that touch on the quality of life of peoples in Western Europe as Roman influence receded in the 5th and 6th centuries both before and after these areas were independent of Roman control, as well as how they were effected by the Roman bureaucracy while it existed.

I am looking to discover how exactly quality of life was altered as Roman territory gradually receded around the age of Justinian.

For Justinian's era, check out Michael Maas's Cambridge Companion to the Age of Justinian. When I was in college, Averil Cameron, one of the first scholars of late antiquity, had a popular sourcebook covering the earlier parts of the period. However, I'm not sure if it's been superseded by something better.
