My Grandpa recently gave me his foreign currency collection. He acquired all kinds of coins and bills from different countries while he was a merchant marine 60 years ago. I've identified the origins of all the coins except for this one. It was minted in 1930, and has what I believe to be Chinese and Urdu inscriptions on the back.
I'm very curious to know what governing body from the 30s was officially bilingual in both Urdu and Chinese! Thanks in advance for any help guys.
What you have there is a British Trade Dollar, a coin minted for the purpose of being used to facilitate trade with China. The lady on the flip side of the coin is Britannia - the female personification of Britain.
Also, the other language on the coin is actually Jawi Malay. Some more information can be found on Numista, a coin catalogue website.
