Requirements for a flair
A flair in /r/AskHistorians indicates extensive, in-depth knowledge about an area of history and a proven track record of providing great answers in the subreddit. In applying for a flair, you are claiming to have:
Expertise in an area of history, typically from either degree-level academic experience or an equivalent amount of self-study.
The ability to cite sources from specialist literature for any claims you make within your area.
The ability to provide high quality answers in the subreddit in accordance with our rules.
/u/Georgy_K_Zhukov has made this helpful guide on our wiki explaining what an answer that demonstrates the above looks like. I highly recommend that anyone considering applying for flair check it out.
How to apply
To apply for a flair, simply post in this thread. Your post needs to include:
Links to 3-5 comments in /r/AskHistorians that show you meet the above requirements.
The text of your flair and which category it belongs in (see the sidebar). Be as specific as possible but be aware there is a limit of 64 characters.
One of the moderators will then either confirm your flair or, if the application doesn't adequately show you meet the requirements, explain what's missing. If there's a backlog this may take a few days but we will try to get around to everyone as quickly as possible.
Expected Behavior
We invest a large amount of trust in the flaired members of /r/askhistorians, as they represent the subreddit when answering questions, participating in AMAs, and even in their participation across reddit as a whole. As such, we do take into account an applicant's user history reddit-wide when reviewing an application, and will reject applicants whose post history demonstrate bigotry, racism, or sexism. Such behavior is not tolerated in /r/askhistorians, and we do not tolerate it from our panelists in any capacity. We additionally reserve the right to revoke flair based on evidence of such behavior after the application process has been completed. /r/AskHistorians is a safe space for everyone, and those attitudes have no place here.

Quality Contributors
If you see an unflaired user consistently giving excellent answers, they can be nominated for a "Quality Contributor" flair. Just message the mods their username and some example comments.
Revoking Flair
Having a flair brings with it a greater expectation to abide by the subreddit's rules and maintain the high standard of discussion we all like to see here. The mods will revoke the flair of anybody who continually breaks the rules or fails to meet the standard for answers in their area of expertise. Happily, we almost never have to do this.
I would like to request an update to my flair. If possible, I would like the addition of "The Spanish Civil War" to my current tag, preferably before "Pope Pius XII during WWII". I think that white is still the best color for my flair, as I do focus on the ideological aspects of the Spanish Civil War more than the other facets of the conflict. That, and I think that a green/white divided flair may not actually be possible. So:

Assorted academic credentials &c aside, I think my post history here would lead to a flair along the lines of "Medieval Europe | Religion & Society." (Ampersands are so very medieval, so if reddit supports symbols in flair, I'd love to have one.)
I love me some Middle Ages up until the very end. It's so heartening to see so many late classicists/early medievalists here that I'd rather leave that era to them and talk about what the later Middle Ages thought of it instead. But when the need arises I can bring the early as well, all the way back to the origen. Occasionally I drop a more sensationalistic piece of evidence into a comment, fishing for further engagement. I like to remember that women existed when the question doesn't explicitly call for it and build my own Tower of Babble when it does.
And confound it all, I fielded a paleography question. With pictures. If nothing else here counts, that must.
I guess I've spent enough time here that I might as well try to apply. My experience is generally in Early Modern Europe, but more particularly within the Holy Roman Empire and Habsburg Austria in particular from the Thirty Years War on to the French Revolutionary Wars. My undergraduate degree is in Modern History and International Relations from the University of St Andrews, and my fourth year 'dissertation' was on the Austrian Habsburg state's position as a great power from 1648-1720. If I were flaired, I suppose it'd be in European History, with the text 'Austrian Habsburgs & the HRE' or something along those lines.

Hi, mods! Have you ever had that experience where you're in line at Starbucks, and the person in front of you picks up your tab in exchange for you "paying it forward"? Alas I have always funded my own caffeine addiction, but I thought I could do you the luxury of paying forward the extra work I've just been handed by requesting flair expansion.
Ideally I would like to have something along the lines of "Medieval & Earliest Modern Europe."
I'm still seeing the world from a Eurocentric or at least Mediterranean viewpoint even when not writing about the West, so I think the Europe bit should stay.
To the first prong, moving beyond 'religion & society,' I have now conversed intelligently upon political culture, the economy, and warfare, including acknowledging my ongoing limitations in this area and sticking to what I do best.
To the second, early modernity, my knowledge base does gradually taper down after 1530. But I can handle the early Reformation, later Reformation, Renaissance, women even if they aren't in religious life or accused of witchcraft, burning heretics, burning witches, and I'm familiar with the sources to conduct further research and recommend them to others.

So here's my shot at adding military history to my flair. Since I'm mostly talking modern military tactics, uniforms and so on, I'm rarely linking to historical records, but more current regulations and tactics that are in place right now. I know the rule is 20 years+, but so many of the questions about tactics and warfare haven't changed a ton in the last 50 years. Mostly self-study, but have served in the military for 16+ years, and taken a ton of courses and training on the subjects I'm referencing (also pushups... lots and lots of pushups).
So, yeah, let's see how this goes.

I think the time has come for me to make a change to my flair. Currently it read "Pacific Worlds | Environmental History." I would like to change it to "Pacific Worlds | France Overseas" to better account for the fact that many of the threads I respond in correspond more to my background in Early Modern France/ Colonial France than they do to my theoretical/historiographical background in Environmental History. French history makes up a good deal of my research and teaching focus, so it may be time to change my flair a little bit so people don't wonder why a "Pacific" focused historian is entering into discussion on France and Slavery in the Caribbean or the Indian Ocean. Hey there Mods, relatively new member of the community here, but I figured I'd go ahead and apply so I can get some feedback on how to improve my contributions here. If I do qualify for a flair I was thinking maybe something along the lines of American Military History, but that might be a little too broad so maybe the American Civil War / Insurgency & Counterinsurgency. I'm requesting a slight change in flair. I'd like it to be "Khoesan History | Hunter-gatherers"; the spelling change is because Khoesan is catching on as the standard spelling and Hunter-gatherers is because I seem to answer questions on other hunter-gatherers as well (I would actually prefer "foragers" to "hunter-gatherers" but I'm afraid people wouldn't be as sure what it means). Keep it green because my primary historical interest is still African Khoesan peoples.

Eh, I'm bored, and I think some people are wondering why the Asian history flair is talking so much about Jonestown without being flaired in it, so I might as well submit an official flair app.

I have been trying my best to contribute what I can to /r/askhistorians for the past 6+ months. I have a huge love for history and have been trying to contribute here as a result as a (hopefully) quality poster. Most of my historical knowledge is self-taught by self-study, I read tons of historical books on my free time and have been doing so far the past few years. I largely read European (and recently have started on American) History, and have largely done my research on late 19th and early 20th century France and Germany. I also have some academic background, including top History grades in High School, and am currently planning to attend the University of Fraser Valley in Canada to study European History (19th Century Europe History.)
In all of my submissions, I have tried my best to provide sources. For some of my earlier submissions, when I was new to the subreddit, I missed out on some of my sources. I have been doing my best to provide sources where I can and currently try do my best to do just that.
While I have some knowledge in Spanish and Russian history for this time period, the flair that i'd like to apply for is "Early 20th Century France/Germany", preferably in blue.

Good evening. I would like to request a flair that reflects my specialty, namely literary historical theory (maybe literary cultural criticism?). I would be more than happy for a flair better worded than that but essentially I would ask only that it reflects my, I believe somewhat proven, knowledge and abilities in using literary theory for the purposes of getting facts about the era/culture/historical aspect of the time it was written, including linguistics. I realise this sounds incredibly pretentious but I legitimately don't know of a word or phrase that fits this except perhaps "Literary Theory of History" or something. I leave that to you, honorable Ephors. If this seems a mite pretentious or skepticism-inducing, I would be just as pleased with flair regarding my knowledge of Ancient Greece.

I'm looking at expanding my flair to reflect my widening research on the Eastern front of World War Two. I'm torn between 'Eastern Front WWII,' which feels a little too broad, or 'Red Army in WWII' which might be closer to the mark.

I'd be interested in getting flaired here. My big area of study for undergrad was Military History, but since then I've been branching out into Insurgency and Counterinsurgency, as well as military technology. Yo! I'm applying for a flair. My expertise is primarily in al-Andalus from the early 8th century to the 11th century (711-1031 or so), and especially the Umayyad era from the initial conquest, to independence and then the Caliphate of Cordoba. Although I do have a fairly wide knowledge on the later centuries as well. The flair I'm hoping to get here is something like "al-Andalus, 7th-11th century" although "Islamic Iberia 7th-11th Century" might be easier for people to understand. The most specific flair I can think of would be something like "Umayyad Spain | Emirate of Cordoba | Caliphate of Cordoba"

Hello all, think its time to stop dragging my heels and flairup. I've got a BA in War, Media and Society and an MA in Military History both from from the University of Kent. I wrote my BA dissertation on 21st Army Group's operational method in Northwest Europe, and my MA on the operational failures of Market Garden. While I've got a good swathe of knowledge from 1898-1945, most of my comments have been on the Second World War, and I'd like to ask for the flair 'British Army in World War Two' until I've written enough on other times to merit a re-think.

I've been an avid military history fan and researcher for as long as I can remember and have been considering a minor in History or Education (I'm currently an engineering student at my university) for the last year or so. My area of self-study (I've got a shelf of 30+ books as well as tens of thousands of pages of period documents and other references saved on my computer) is WWII, especially the United States Army during that period. Applying for flair again after having taken into account the many different channels of advice given to me. I'm more military history than Asian history, specifically in Japan, along the lines of a Heian to Edo period Japanese armour and weapons, if that works at all, and because I haven't found many posts that I'm able to reply to in regards to other areas of study within Asia. I am a neuropsychologist/psychology professor, one of my regular classes is a history of psychology class, which also addresses the history of scientific methodology and philosophical origins. My flair would probably need to relate to the history of science, psychology, philosophy and/or neuroscience.
