How was Cuba able to intervene significantly in Angola with the American embargo in place?

I've watched a documentary on the Angolan Civil War and read through the old AskHistorians threads. One aspect that wasn't really covered is how Cuba was logistically able to send tens of thousands of men and material thousands of miles to Angola. Could some ships get through the blockade or did the Cubans have to rely entirely on aircraft? How expensive would it be to move everything by air?

What American blockade? It ended on November 20, 1962, well over a decade before Cuba's intervention in Angola began.

EDIT: The American trade embargo is not a blockade. It prevents American companies from trading with Cuba, and has occasionally put pressure on other countries to do the same, but it does not stop Cuban ships from entering or leaving Cuba, or third party ships from doing so. Embargoes and blockades are two very different things. One is an act of trade policy, the other an act of war.
