I think this is an Ask Historians question... I was just looking at this map
and was struck by southeast asia. Pretty much everywhere else, zones are vertical lines, sometimes following coastlines, mountains or other natural features. When you look at Asia though, most of the zones are country borders. Why is that?

You will find islands belonging to a country in the "jutting out" timezone in those areas.
