Some of them were given as free workers to Germans, both on an industrialized basis (Zwangsarbeiter) under sometimes horrible conditions and to less important officials to help them for example with farm work. Depending of that specific official the conditions there could reach from horrible to not much worse than other (German) farm workers. One has to keep in mind that since a lot of German young man were fighting, a lot of the POWs from other countries were used to work in the industry, especially the war related ones, since they needed more and more workers, and more and more men were sent to war.
