For both wigs and regular hair pomatum and powder are used. Pomatum (or pomade) is usually animal fat based, using rendered tallow or fat so it doesn't "go bad". This is mixed with a variety of oils depending on the recipe. Clove oil is fairly common and works as a natural insect repellant. To balance out the wetness of the pomatum, powder is used. Often based with a wheat starch, it too has other additives for scent or color. Recipes can be found in The Toilet of Flora. To care for the hair between pomade/powdering (every week or two) it's recommended that you comb down to the roots so there is no build up from the scalp. Regular combing and brushing distributes natural oils through the hair and the products can be re-applied as needed to achieve the right balance.
