To which time period and reigning power are you referring? The short answer is 'pretty terrible.' For over 80 years (until the 1960s?) aboriginal children were taken from their families, stripped of their languages (to be taught either English or French, depending on the area) and "civilized" by the church in so-called residential schools, with the encouragement of the Canadian government. Hundreds of the children died from the poor living conditions, some without any formal burial or notice to the parents. No formal apology was issued until the last decade or so (?). Most eurodescendant and immigrant Canadians are ignorant of the grim details today. This history is not taught in many Canadian schools. The ongoing effects on aboriginal communities today are undeniable and amount to ongoing colonization, or, as rights groups are pushing to have it be called, cultural genocide. I can update with more sources when I'm not on my phone, but look up the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's report/site for more info. The treatment of indigenous peoples in earlier times, under British and French rule was also very bad, but I personally can't speak to a comparison with the US during early colonial years.
