Margherta Datini, a merchant's wife, had at least two embroidered wool purses. This was in early 14th century Italy and she was of the merchant class...not working or nobility (Gies, F., Gies, J., Women in the Middle Ages). Now these purses usually just held money...they weren't the carry all type bags we women use today. I know I've read more about women's fashion earlier but this was the only book I could get my hands on right now for a clear date.
