According to the book "Eyewear" by Franca Acerenza, Venetian glassmakers made the first corrective lenses in the late 13th century. These were convex lenses for farsightedness. There was a Dominican friar who gave a homily at the church of Santa Maria Novella on Feb 23, 1306 where he remarked that corrective lenses had only been invented in the last 20 years. There is also Alessandro Spina's funeral elegy upon his death in 1313, at the Dominican monastery of St.Catherine at Pisa. It mentions he had seen the original invention when it was new, and copied it.
