Why does the State Department acknowledge France as the first country to recognize the US when the more commonly accepted first is Morocco?

Per the office of the US Department of State - Office of the Historian:

"What country was the first to recognize the United States?

France recognized the United States as an independent state on February 6, 1778."

Why do you claim that the more commonly accepted first is Morocco? I, for one, have never heard that. Give a source for that part of the argument, and maybe we can figure it out.
