In 1885, Britain passed the Criminal Law Amendment bill. While most famous for raising the age of consent from 13 to 16, it also made homosexuality illegal (sec. 11). Under this provision, homosexuality could be punished by 2 years 'hard labor, hard bed, and hard fare.' This is exactly what Oscar Wilde had to endure after he was found guilty in his 1895 trial.
