This question may look stupid due to position of women in medieval history, but this kind of succession is not logic.
As shown in this article, England royal family bloodline may have been falsed by adultery. And precisely by a women, because only mothers are 100% sure to be related with their sons, this makes heirs possibly illegitimate to their father's kingdoms.
A lineage of women only would be the only way to make sure that the dynasty is preserved
The question too is always where? It was not that way across the world. Matrilineal succession has been common at times in Southeast Asia for nobility and cognatic or bilateral kinship was also widespread (meaning it can draw on either line of lineage). Patriarchal succession and social organization is only normal in certain periods and places.
