If you are interested in French colonial history in Africa, "A Mission to Civilize: The Republican Idea of Empire in France and West Africa, 1895-1930" by Alice Conklin is great.

Edit: I should obviously mention that by learning about this, you will also learn a lot about French culture and politics at the time, as well as their ideas on race.

i can only advise u books about the period range from revolution to the end of the first french empire. I would advise u to read the amazing four books series from max gallo about napoleon (should be easy to find) and "the memoirs of Joseph Fouche" very interesting to have another point of view for this period considering fouche admired and then hated Napoleon
