Why did presidential inauguration move from March fourth to Jan. 20 after World War II?

I know the basic reason (to shorten the lame duck period following presidential elections) but will leave that to someone more knowledgeable to expand on rather than speculate about the specific instigating factors. I will note, though, that your timeline is a little off. The date change was caused by the 20th Amendment, which was ratified in 1933. So it was in place prior to World War II.
