I don't know if it's a misconception or not, but why were many battles fought in formations on open ground? It would seem like it would be obvious which combatant would have the superior force, so why would the inferior force engage there and not in a forest or otherwise asymetric battlegound.

It's stereotypical especially during the Napoleonic Era.
