I know it's a somewhat obscure conflict, but I was wondering if anyone here could point me to a volume or two worth reading covering the Border War between the South African Defense Forces (allied with UNITA) and the Angolan MPLA (supporyed by Cuba), with a special focus on the Battle of Cuito Cuavanale, or failing that a solid, wider history of the Angolan Civil War.
Leopold Scholtz, “The SADF in the Border War 1966-1989”, is the best most balanced book I've read. Also try Fred Bridgland "The War for Africa" Helmoed Heitman "War in Angola: The Final South African Phase", these two are more pro SADF but they were both reporters in Angola and Fred Bridgland was the reporter who brought the proof that the SADF were there to the world. For a Cuban centric look I'd suggest Piero Gleijeses "Conflicting Missions". And to cap it off try Chester Crocker on Constructive Engagement in Southern Africa, but I can't remember the book title at the moment. ( A good synopsis of Crocker is written by J.E Davies called "Constructive Engagement?") If you want a book that no one in my department takes seriously, but I find interesting, there is always "Days of the Generals" by Hilton Hamann.
