I've been thinking a lot about Nietzsche recently, particularly what he was to say about music. It seems like some of his most penetrating and beautiful prose is devoted to describing the effect music had on him. Clearly, Wagner had an influence but Germanic composers in generally seemed to inspire his thinking.
So my questions: Do we know what performances Nietzsche attended? Do we know what role "classical" music played in his daily life? And do historians have an opinion about how they may have affected his thought?
Music certainly was very important for him, like for other German 19th century philosophers. But he actually got his hands dirty, so to speak...
He did well studying piano as a child, and became an amateur composer (I don't know to what extent he was self-taught).
The IMSLP has scores for some works.
I have not listened or analyzed his complete production, but what I have heard/read is typical 19th century German music (leaning to the conservative side).
I can't tell you much about what kind of performances he attended.
