People totally know how many years have passed, even if they don't have newspapers because they would still need to know when to plant their crops and when to celebrate holidays. Printed calendars that are very similar to Old Farmer's Almanac have existed in China for centuries and was used extensively by farmers. Most cultures have coming of age ceremonies or designated age of majority at very specific ages that wouldn't have been possible if they don't know how old they are, for example passages in the books of Exodus and Numbers note the age of majority for army service as twenty.
