Since Denmark basically controls the exit point of the Baltic Sea, how critical was Copenhagen during the Cold War period? Did they contribute to NATO efforts in any way?
NATO certainly had a great strategic advantage in controlling access to the Baltic Sea (and also the Black Sea via Turkey and Greece), but I wouldn't say Denmark was critical. Denmark and the Soviet Union had an excellent relationship despite being members of opposing alliances, so Russia still enjoyed access to the North Sea throughout the cold war.
