A few months ago I visited "America's Stonehenge" in New Hampshire which was fascinating but the interpretation was dated and at times somewhat sensational. I swear the 12 minute introductory video used the word "mysterious" at least 10 times.
I did some basic internet sleuthing when I got home but even Google Scholar was limited and peppered with weird pseudohistorical things about "holy ghosts" and Vikings (TIL that American Physical Society is not reputable.) So I come to you in hopes that someone knows more than I!
What is the general interpretation of the site at so called "America's Stonehenge"? What were the dates most think it was occupied for its primary use? And what do we know about their culture (kinship system, social organization, subsistence strategies, religion, etc.)? A lot was made at the site about the astrological alignments - how reputable are such claims and do we have any evidence for how such alignments were used/understood?

The general consensus is that the site is archaeologically useless. If William Goodwin didn't construct the thing out of wholecloth (or, rather, the remains of an early 19th Century farm - some of the stones definitely are colonial in origins), he altered the site so extensively in his attempt to "reconstruct" it that it lost its archaeological context. One way or another, the site is what Goodwin wanted it to be.
Although it may a lot of pseudo-history, check out the episode of "America Unearthed" that dealt with Mystery Hill. Alternately, read this review of the episode as he debunks many theories that the host comes up with. From what I've made out it was most likely a storage/work area from colonial settlers. The astrological alignments seem to only allign on Google, and don't actually follow the curvature of the earth. That show is fun to watch, but there's an incredible amount of bullshit just for entertainment.
