I would love to see a robust answer examining the place of the founders in the confederate historical imagination, but I just want to interject here to say: George Washington was Virginian!

George Washington was actually from Virginia, the owner of a large plantation. I don't have a lot of knowledge on this topic, however, his family tree does tie in with the Confederacy. George Washington had no children of his own, but Martha had children from her previous marriage which he adopted. One of her grandsons was George Washington Park Custis, who built Arlington house and inherited a great deal of Washingtonian objects such as the campaign equipment used by GW during the Revolution. His daughter, Mary Randolph Park Custis married Robert E. Lee and they resided at Arlington house until the Civil War. The house was eventually occupied by Union troops and taken for government use, so we now have Arlington cemetery on that land.
