Just curious if a person in the Roman Army or other similar armies typically had one sword for most of their career, or if they needed to replace them over time. Thank you for anyone who contributes.
In Rome, from what I understand, families would pass down swords within their family, sometimes a whole sword and sometimes just the blade. The Norse prized swords and would often go to the grave with it's owner because they were extremely expensive. They would also sometimes, bend them or break them to prevent them from being used after the owners death. But overall, I would imagine they would have lasted a while, but it would depend on the blade quality, conditions it was being used in and maintenance of the weapon.
