It's 1850 and I want to travel from the UK to as far western America as I can. How do I go about doing this?

Get yourself an introduction to the Russian American Company. Figure out some way to get them to invite you to tour their holdings in Alaska.

Cross Siberia. Go to Alaska. You can not be further west in America. Your best way to get there will be through the Russians.

If they are uncooperative, you might be able to get to Western Alaska via shipping on a New England whaler. This, however, will take considerably longer and be less comfortable.
