This topic has been quite elusive. I know the officers used Lamellar armor, so did the average soldier use mail? Could the Romans afford good (upper tier) equipment for their men in the time of Alexius? How was the army structured compared to how it was in the time of Justinian? Can someone provide a link or direct information on military tactics of their armies? How did they raise an army? About what percentage were mercenaries? Were individual units of men uniform in their distribution of arms and armor (unlike feudal kingdoms)?

Just to be absolutely clear, do you mean Byzantines or Italian Romans? By this time, they had diverged significantly.
