Can anyone give some historical context to this 1947 parody map of how Californians see the US?

Does anyone have the historical knowlei to explain some of the more esoteric jokes here, ie Chamber of Commerce in Florida or Maine's friendly republicans?

It does have a certain affinity to Saul Steinberg's 1976 famous map of the USA, as seen from New York, though it's busier. Most of the jokes are about Californians' lack of knowledge about the rest of the country, assumptions the weather is bad. New England had had a long tradition of moderate Republicans in 1947.
