The Mikado wasn't staged in Japan until after World War II.
There is an interesting story: the revival of The Mikado in the UK in 1907 was banned for six weeks during the visit of Prince Fushimi to Britain on diplomatic business on fear that a show that, on its surface, mocked the Emperor of Japan would offend the Japanese dignitaries. Prince Fushimi apparently expressed disappointment over not getting to see the show.
