Of the successful Mongol conquests Southern China took the longest, most grueling campaign. It took some 40 years for the Mongols to conquer southern China from the Southern Song dynasty. One of the Great Khan Mongke, was killed by Chinese artillery (or died of illness, depending on the source) while besieging a fortress near modern day Chonqing.
The Mongols also unsuccessfully attempted to invade Japan, Vietnam, and Egypt.
