I don't know so much about Czar Nicolas II, but I can give you some context that may be helpful. I took a class on terrorism last semester, and one of the things we studied extensively was the assassination of Czar Alexander II in 1881, which was one of the biggest catalysts of the Revolution (and therefore the assassination of Czar Nicolas II), and I actually wrote a paper on international news coverage of it.

The bottom line? They demonized the assassins, referring to them as "nihilists," even though populists would be a better word to describe them, and heavily supported the Russian government. The New York State Senate even passed a measure condemning the assassination and promising support for the Russian government. Even the Germans, who would wage a massive war against the Russians in only ~30 years, were very vocal in their stance against the assassins and in support of the government.
