Obviously religion was an important part of Russian life before the Soviet Union. Did they attempt to provide some kind of secular alternative, or did they discourage their celebration altogether?
Already by 1925 the influence of the Church on the population decreased significantly. Especially it concerned of large parts of the industrial centers. Religious rites were replaced by the new secular, propagated the Soviet authorities. Only in the villages mainly retained rites.
Laws were passed to abolish the bride money, of plural marriage Ban, to raise the age of marriage.
Among the religious of household ceremonies ecclesiastical wedding in the first place being replaced by civilian "red" rite. For the time gap with the church wedding meant infinitely more than the rejection of a conditional rite: for it was the breaking of intra-economic order, the rejection of trusteeship from of the elderly and patriarchal traditions, the recognition of the equal status of women in family and society.
