Booker T Washington did not "oppose civil rights".

Granted, he was the leader of one side, the less radical, more conciliatory side, in a debate within the African-American community regarding how to advance the plight of said community. In exchange for not pushing as militantly for civil rights, among other things, in the Atlanta Compromise, African Americans were to receive better access and funding for education, among other things. This reflects, not Washington's anti-civil rights attitude - because only an overly simplistic reading would suggest that - but rather, it reflects his belief that education was paramount in the struggle for black equality.

Famously, the other side in this debate, more militant in its thinking, was led by W. E B. DuBois, who went on to found the NAACP.
