Only pre-Marian legionaries provided their own armour. Prior to the Marian reforms in 107 BC, legionaries were divided into groups based on wealth and experience. Following the reforms the Roman state provided the equipment instead, allowing the lower classes to join the army and thereby becoming professional soldiers instead. The legionaries that we traditionally imagine are of the Marian variety.
