What punishment would Delphine LaLaurie have gotten if she was actually caught?

For those that don't know the case of delphine la laurie was one where a woman tortured and killed her slaves. It's an old case and in the end she fled to France to avoid prosecution. She was caught with killing one slave I believe and her only punishment was a fine. Had she been prosecuted what punishment could they have actually given her?

Was this even a real event? I had thought that there weren't any historical references for it and it basically only appeared in some 'Ghosts And Vampires Of New Orleans' type book.
