Could you describe the humor of jesters of medieval times?

by MrOaiki

Let's say Tom Le Fol who was King Edwards jester year 1294-1295. What exactly did they do, is their humor described in any writings of the time? What made people find them funny? I've seen paintings of their "funny" clothes, and then what?

Jesters were an interesting combination of self-depricating, silly humour, but also intelligent observations and almost political satyre. Their clothing was "silly" and many of the jokes they did were gags. However, they frequently made jokes (sometimes thinly veiled, sometimes more obvious) about significant people including the royal family and current events.
