The title pretty much explains it. I played Shogun 2 and its expansion "Fall of the Samurai" recently and watched the movie "The last samurai" and while they might have a few points correct in their history I want to go deeper and learn more.
So I ask you historians if you have any good reading material you can recommend or tell me where to start? Thank you for taking your time. :)

Blatantly hijacking this thread to push a beautiful gem of a book: Junya Kagakuni's Drifting Toward the Southeast: The Story of Five Japanese Castaways. Given your mention of The Last Samurai, I think you'd find it a very interesting window into the late Tokugawa world. At a time when contact with the outside world was still rather proscribed, some fishermen were lost in the Pacific and rescued by Yankee whalers. They travelled across the US and back to Japan, where their story was interpreted by an artist in breathtaking watercolors. It's a unique archive for understanding the contact of two cultures at the moment just before Japan's reemergence onto the world stage.
Worth a read!
