I found Ian Knight's Zulu Rising to be quite good - good detail, and he seems to have done the research rather than just repeat the same old ideas. So for example he really tried to get to the bottom of what actually happened at Isandlwana, and IIRC he uses both Zulu and British accounts for fill in the gaps as best as possible. The narrative 'stops' before Rourkes Drift as I recall so it doesn't really explain the outcome of the war. Also I don't think he went into a lot of detail about other battles like Hlobane.

If I recall correctly some reader reviews thought the same topic had been better dealt with, possibly in other books by the author? Anyhow, hope that's a good start.
