An ancient version of bocce ball was played in roman times, as well as even before then. More famous was chariot racing, with massive hippodromes built for the sport in Rome and Constantinople. The Circus Maximus being a prime example. Wrestling was also a common sport, as was follis which is kinda like volley ball. Harpastum was another ball sport that Romans played.
