I am a student scientist and I am working for a wonderful and brilliant neurologist who I would like to buy a gift for at the end of my service.
She is a real medical history nut - but I think she is fairly specific to medicine/neurology in the New York area in her history knowledge. I think she is most interested in what you guys would call modern medicine - medicine from about 1920's to modern day. She also grew up and studied medicine in West Virginia, so perhaps she would like something pertaining to there as well.
I was thinking of getting her something that speaks to this medical history interest of hers, but I am having trouble thinking of something great. I don't really want it to be too academic and heavy - more like something light and fun. Perhaps a medical history graphic novel? Or something of that weight. If anyone has any ideas I would REALLY appreciate it. Thank you so much!!
You might want to consider something related to MRI. The first machine is in Stony Brook University. You could also look into anything from the multiple universities in NY. There's also Brookhaven national lab, but idk how much they have on medical stuff
I have a few books from the Burns Archive, which has over 700,000 medical photos (through the 1950s, plenty of them having to do with neurology). I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Stanley Burns on a set tour of The Knick, which is a fantastic show about medicine in New York City at the turn of the 20th Century. The show's writers were inspired by the life of Dr. William Stewart Halsted; one of the preeminent surgeons at Johns Hopkins, he battled an addiction to both cocaine and morphine.
Dr. Burns and his daughter Liz are advisors for the show, and I got to pick their brains and see some fascinating and rare pieces of medical history. Perhaps a book(s) from their archive (Dr. Burns has written over 75) and a copy of season 1 of The Knick might be a nice gift, or at least a good starting point. The Knick incorporates a lot of great details about New York City (including the brutal Tenderloin race riot in August 1900), so it's perfect if she likes local history.
