I keep hearing that it was common practice to write letters, etc. using the name of an authority figure in place of your own, and that this was not considered deceitful in the ANE.

Can anyone point me towards a good source on whether or not this is true? I'm concerned that this might be a myth perpetuated by apologists without any grounding in historical scholarship.
