Hello! I'd like to know why in East Germany spying was so high and authorities were more oppressive in comparison with other Eastern Block states, like Hungary which also bordered a capitalist country, but was a lot more liberal? Thanks in advance!
I think one big difference is that after the "Wende" (the reunification) all archives of the Stasi where made open to public (you can look up files about yourself at least). That means that the full extent of the spying in the GDR is a lot better known and researched then in the UDSSR or hungary.
