Is there a period that would eclipse the modern day for consumption of alcohol?

Antebellum America had much higher alcohol consumption per capita than today. They drank almost twice the amount of alcohol that people drink today. Beer and cider as well as liquor were served almost every meal and even at church, elections, and militia training exercises. People drank more alcohol as it was safer than drinking water, as they lacked the understanding of how disease spread and didn't boil or otherwise purify their water.
