This is FRUS, a collection of American diplomatic correspondence and analysis from the period. The volumes regarding Britain, the USSR, and Eastern Europe for the years of 1945 through 1948 will be helpful if you wish to get a feel for the view on the ground and from above in those years.

Churchill was right. He was considered an alarmist by the same sorts of fools who had considered him an alarmist ten years before. If I find British diplomatic correspondence, I will return with another comment.
